In I.B.M. Holiday at any time, or maybe none

It is the dream of every worker: taking vacation time as much as you want in the short term and not worry about your boss calling you on it. Leave early, take a long weekend, string two weeks - as you like. No need to call in sick on Friday so you can disappear for a fishing trip. Just go, no one is watching.

 Vacation With IBM

That is essentially what goes on at IBM, one of the cornerstones of corporate America, where each of the 355 000 workers are entitled to three or more weeks of vacation. The company does not keep track of who takes how long, or when not to distribute the choice vacation periods by seniority and not let people carry days off each year. Instead, for the past year, employees at all levels have made informal arrangements with their direct supervisors, guided mainly by their ability to do your work on time. Many people post their vacation plans on electronic calendars that colleagues can view online, and they leave word about how they can be reached in a pinch.

"It's like when you went to college and you did not have high school teachers nagging you anymore," said Mark L. Hanny, IBM's vice president of alliances with independent software vendors. "Employees like that we put more responsibility on them."

But the flip side of flexibility, at least at IBM, is peer pressure. Mr. Hanny and other IBM employees, including his assistant, Shari Chiara, say they frequently check their e-mails and voice mail during the holidays. Bosses sometimes ask subordinates to cancel days off to meet deadlines.

Some labor experts say such continued blurring of lines between work and play can overtax employees and lead to health problems, especially in companies where there is an expectation that everyone is always on duty.
Vacation in IBM jOB

"If the leadership does not take the time, people will be skeptical whether they can," said Kim Stattner of Hewitt Associates, a human resources consultancy. "There is the possibility of a domino effect."

Frances Schneider, who retired from an IBM sales division last year after 34 years, said one thing never changed, there was a year when she took all her allotted time off.

"It was seven days a week, but people ended up putting in more hours because of all the flexibility, without really thinking about it," says Schneider. "Although you had this wonderful freedom to take days when you want, you really could not. IBM tends to be a group of workaholics."

IBM officials said they have no idea whether workers take more days or less now than before, and have not studied the effects of policy on efficiency.

But they point to employee surveys showing that self-directed work and vacation policy is one of the top three reasons workers choose to stay there.

"Change is change," said Richard Calo, vice president of relations of the global workforce. "We had some initial questioning. But at the end of the day, you remember how much time you spend. This was not a difficult task."

Mr. Calo, the human resources supervisor, said the vacation policy for an indefinite period "is not a total license to do whatever you want to do," and that employees are expected to produce quality work, even though the company did not paying attention to when or where they work.

The hands-off approach to vacation time, which gradually took over the past decade, came amid change IBM's engineering and manufacturing into services like consulting and is part of a broader demise of old notions of eight pay hours to eight hours of work "in a fixed location.

Aided by broadband connections, cellphones and video conferencing software, 40 percent of IBM's employees have no dedicated offices, working instead at home, at a customer site, or a company of hundreds of "centers of electron mobility "throughout the world, where workers drop in to use phones, Internet connections and other resources.

Long a trendsetter in human resources - it began offering family leave in the 1950s - IBM is probably the largest end so completely with tracking vacation, although a number of new and small firms have similar policies.

Best Buy has introduced a program called results-oriented Work Environment for its 4,000 company employees, giving them freedom to do their job without regard to the hours they put in day.

Dance version of airline safety demos

An airplane flight for some is usually a grueling experience. There is the seat-gripping, literally, take-off moment, the occasional turbulence while up in the air, the snoring seatmate for longer flights, and the belly-churning descend and touch-down. Some people hold their breaths the entire flight and only release them after the plane has rolled to a halt.

There are some passengers who get off the plane all dazed and limp because of the ordeal they have undergone. The flight, though it may not be uneventful, may be stressful because of the initial fear that the passenger has prior to the flight. There are really some who dread flying because of previous bad experiences on the plane. Who could really blame them? Flying by plane takes you thousands of miles up in the air, with only the wings of the plane keeping it from plunging down to the ground.

A great number of plane accidents have been reported every now and then and these reports have added more fear to some people who are flying. As such, more and more people choose traveling by land or water as more safe and convenient for them. However, if it cannot be helped, people turn to traveling by plane and endure the whole experience.

There have been latest reports swirling about in travel and tourism news that an airline in the Philippines has found a way to somehow alleviate the boredom or fear of flying for some people. Flight attendants of Cebu Pacific Airlines have found an innovative and more entertaining way of presenting the airline’s in-flight safety demonstrations. By dancing to the tunes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry’s music, the attendants have added spice to the airline safety demos by doing a choreographed dance.

Initially intended as an experiment, the dance performance has begun to make news. A passenger happened to capture the dance on the camera-phone and started spreading it around. It has now become big news, showing that the flight attendants are not just good at serving drinks and snacks but that they are good in dancing as well.

Cebu Pacific Airlines first captured the people’s attention as a low cost airline, and it has been improving its services since then. They have already gained popularity in doing things the unconventional way in making their flights enjoyable and memorable for the passengers. The dance demo is another unique concept from the airline. The flight attendants broke into a choreographed dance and started teaching the passengers how to handle the seatbelts, life jackets, and where to find the emergency exits should something go wrong during the flight.

The flight attendants moved to the beat of popular songs California Gurls and Just Dance. Shock first registered on the passengers’ faces as they were taken by surprise of the sudden unexpected event. However, they quickly recovered and started enjoying the performance. They even broke into a round of applause after the flight attendants have completed their dance.

The performance was given during the middle of the flight, after the seat-belt sign has been turned off. There was also a standard safety demonstration that was given at the start of the flight. There has been a positive response from the people regarding this new idea from the airline. Reports have shown that people liked the performance and are looking forward to another experience when they take the next flight.

It is suggested that more airlines should start taking note of this new idea for it has wrought an overwhelming response. It was further implied that it could be more beneficial to the passengers because they will be more attentive during the demonstration. If passengers listen up rather than act indifferent because of fear or worries, they will be more prepared in the event of an emergency.

From this performance, other new ideas to improve the services of the airline are expected in the days to come. The effects proved to be promising and this may just be a start of a new trend in airline services.

Where to ski for cheap: Eastern Europe

In some countries, the holiday season is highlighted by snow. Ushering in the festive season, snow makes the celebrations complete and sets the mood for some adventure-filled activities. Children, and even the young at heart, enjoy snow fights every now and then. There is also sled-riding and of course, skiing.

For the seasoned skiers, skiing is one great source of adrenaline rush. The slide down the slopes that starts slowly before gradually increasing is an experience that makes them appreciate the snow more. As such, more people, ski enthusiasts especially, make trips to ski spots and travel destinations like the Swiss and Austrian Alps yearly to experience the snow and the slopes.

These ski holidays are costly by far and with the recession, more and more people are in search of cheaper travel destinations to spend the holidays in. Where can you find a cheap ski holiday this winter? Try Eastern Europe and you might just get a great holiday experience minus the high cost.

The mountains in Eastern Europe may not be similar with those of the Swiss and the Austrian Alps but there are tourist attractions that offer equal fun for a much lower rate. More and more people are booking for a skiing holiday in places like Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Romania for the coming winter. These are the top three ski resorts in Eastern Europe that offer cheaper rates and all-day passes. Of course, there are others in the area that offer great deals which you might also want to check.

A ski holiday for one week in Europe this winter can only cost less than £300. What’s more, skiing, ski hire, dinner, and drinks are also included in the package. This is truly one great deal that is worth grabbing! You can avail these great offers in popular ski destinations and now popular travel attractions like Poiana Brasov in Romania, Bansko in Bulgaria, and Kanin in Slovenia.

Poiana Brasov in Romania is extremely popular among tourists from Switzerland, Germany, and France. With its summits fully accessible by car, bus, and shuttle, visitors will not have the need to travel far to look for a spot to ski. Nightclubs, restaurants, and hotels abound the area, providing the guests further entertainment to cap off their night.

A lift ticket in Poiana Brasova is usually estimated to 110lei/day (£22) while the ski rental is 45 lei/day (£9). Hotel accommodations are also cheap from €40/night (£30). In January, airfare flights are around £49. Locals advice tourists to avoid the weekends for it can get crowded during those days.

Bansko in Bulgaria lies between three mountains. Rhodopes is situated on the east, Pirin on the west, and Rila is on the north. Closest to the city is Pirin but a trek to the other two proves to be something worthwhile as well with a stop at Mt. Todorka with 2756m peak. Lift ticket in the area ranges from €28 per day (£24) to €159 for six days (£137). Ski rental comes cheaply at €36/day (£31) while accommodation doubles starting from €30/night (£26). Airfare rate when travelling in January costs £50. the most challenging slope in the area, which is 16km of uninterrupted descent, can be found from Todorka Peak to the Bansko lift station.

For those who are into more adventure, Bovec and Kanin offer 2000m slopes for skiing. A view of the Soča River Valley, the Alps, and the Adriatic Sea are visible as one speeds downwards. The area has 300km of slopes with 8 lifts to take you to the top. A very interesting feature of the place is that it offers people a chance to ski in three different slopes. There are 5 ski resorts in the Bovec and Kanin region with Sella Nevea and Tarvisio in Italy being the more popular ones, Amoldstein in Austria, and Kanin in Slovenia.

Lift tickets are sold at €28 (£24) per day, with discounts available. The ski rental is worth €20/day (£17) while accommodations double starting from €27.50/night (£24). For the airfare, rates start from £74 for travel in January.

Take Off Olah Raga Dirgantara Paralayang (Paragliding).

Tourists in Space by 2015!

Space travel, before everything that man has achieved now, was a far-fetched notion and impossible to achieve. The space is a great distance away from humans that it can only be observed through the telescope. However, the mind is an amazing creation, and with it everything became possible. Who would have thought that the once unreachable space can now be a possible place for tourists to visit?

Back when the Wright brothers were experimenting on their first aero plane, the barrier between what is impossible started to crumble. It was a feat to defy gravity and be able to send something as big as an aero plane with people boarding it flying up in high altitude. Man was able to do that and more astonishing accomplishments followed. The word “impossible”, as an advertisement put it, became nothing.

After the astounding success the aero plane, businessmen have found the business potential in it. Airlines then became a very lucrative business, offering the people a means to travel from one place to another in a short period of time. Nowadays, it has become a necessity and most people prefer traveling by plane more convenient and efficient as compared to traveling by ship or train.

Nowadays, people send astronauts out to space almost everyday. Some go out to check on other launched space crafts while others stay there for a period of time to man them. This has become a natural occurrence that some people don’t even take notice of these anymore. Why would they when even the planet Mars, which was once just a part of the solar system that our planet belongs in, is now considered another possible home for us humans?

With the astronauts’ coming and going to outer space a natural event, the ever-creative minds of man have once again tried to look at other possibilities. Space tourism was the product. Though limited and expensive, orbital space tourism became a reality due to the Russian Space Agency, the first and only to offer transport for tourists to outer space. A flight to the International Space Station (ISS) through the Soyuz spacecraft amounts to US$ 20-35. This has signaled the beginning of the space tourism industry.

Many other startup companies have attempted to join this industry. Just recently, Boeing has announced its plans to offer space flights for tourists who wish to have a glimpse of the outer space. This is another proof that space tourism may indeed be another lucrative business worth exploring. With a partnership with Space Adventures, the company based in Virginia which is responsible for organizing trips to space aboard the Soyuz, Boeing is looking forward to the reality of yet another ambitious venture.

With a $50 million grant from the US Government, Boeing is to develop a space capsule which is going to bring the astronauts and tourists to the ISS. Crew Space Transportation capsule, or more popularly called the CST-100, is designed to have 7 seats to accommodate the astronauts and the space tourists. This latest venture of Boeing will be called “space taxi” and is slated to be launched in 2015.

NASA is hoping that space tourism will help in cutting the costs in the maintenance and operations of the shuttle while giving space enthusiasts a once in a lifetime chance to see space up close. However, with this new venture still in its early stage of development, the price for a trip is very expensive. An estimate of $35 to $40 million is said to be the cost of a journey to the ISS. Space agencies are positive that with the fast-paced innovation in the technology, the price will eventually decrease.
